What Is a Water Pump?
A water pump is a machine that moves water and adds energy to it.
In a home, a pump is commonly used to move water from a water source — such as a storage tank — through the household piping to showers, taps, toilets and appliances.
In very simple terms:
Water enters the pump → the pump adds energy → water leaves at higher pressure
This additional pressure helps the water travel through the piping system and reach the places where it is needed.
Why would a home need a water pump?
Not every house needs a pump.
If the existing water supply already provides sufficient and stable pressure throughout the house, an additional booster pump may not be necessary.
A pump is commonly considered when homeowners experience problems such as:
- Weak shower pressure
- Low water pressure on upper floors
- Pressure dropping when several taps are opened
- Slow water flow at certain parts of the house
- Insufficient pressure after adding a water filtration system
- Water needing to be transferred from a storage tank to the house
However, low water pressure does not automatically mean that the pump is too small — or that you need a bigger pump.
