Is a Bigger Pump Better?

Not necessarily.

This is one of the most common misconceptions about home water pumps.

A bigger pump can produce more pressure or flow, but excessive pressure may cause other problems, particularly in an older plumbing system.

Depending on the condition of the installation, excessive pressure can place additional stress on:

  • Old pipes
  • Pipe joints and fittings
  • Flexible hoses
  • Valves
  • Water heaters
  • Filters and other connected equipment

An oversized pump can also consume more energy than necessary.

The objective should therefore be:

Not the biggest pump — the right pump for the system.
